Marriage in Turkey for Foreigners

Official Documents and Legal Procedures

Turkey has become an increasingly attractive destination for international marriages thanks to its cultural richness and geographical location. Foreign nationals can legally marry in Turkey, but the process involves specific legal procedures and documentation requirements. This guide provides a clear and concise overview of the marriage process for foreigners in Turkey.

The Right to Marry in Turkey as a Foreigner

Foreign nationals can legally marry in Turkey—either to Turkish citizens or to other foreign nationals. However, to exercise this right, both parties must meet the marriage eligibility criteria defined by their own countries’ laws and by Turkish law. Key requirements include marital capacity, legal age, and free will to marry, evaluated within the scope of international private law and the Turkish Civil Code. For a marriage to be recognized under Turkish law, the application must be made through official authorities—typically municipal marriage offices.

  1. Required Documents and Legal Verifications

To get married in Turkey, foreign nationals must provide a set of officially verified documents. These typically include:

  • Certificate of No Impediment (Affidavit of Marital Status):
This document proves that the individual is legally free to marry. It must be issued by the relevant authority in the applicant’s country or its consulate in Turkey. The document must be apostilled (if applicable), officially translated into Turkish, and notarized.
  • Birth Certificate (if not included in the Certificate of No Impediment):
Shows the individual’s full name, date, and place of birth. A translated and notarized version is required.
  • Valid Passport and Turkish Translation:
The original passport and a notarized Turkish translation are required during the application process.
  • Health Report:
Issued by a state hospital or family health center in Turkey, the report must show that there are no medical conditions prohibiting marriage (such as certain infectious diseases). The report must include an ID photo and a hospital stamp.
  • Passport Photos:
Usually between 4–6 recent passport-sized photos are required per person.

Each municipality in Turkey may have slightly different administrative requirements or preferred formats, so it’s important to consult the local marriage office beforehand.

  1. Application and Marriage Procedure

Marriage applications must be submitted to the municipality (Belediye) in the district where at least one of the spouses resides or plans to reside. All documents must be complete and properly legalized at the time of application.

Once the application is accepted, the marriage officer will assign a date for the official ceremony. Both parties must be physically present at the ceremony, and if either does not speak Turkish, a sworn interpreter must be provided to ensure valid consent is given.
